Great Scott!
2/1/2012 4:47 PM
The speech by education commissioner Robert Scott to the Texas Association of School Administrators on Monday will inevitably spawn considerable speculation about Rick Perry’s future involvement in education policy issues. The remarkable thing about the speech is that Scott sounded a lot more like a policy maker than a bureaucrat. He apologized for the $4 [...]

I was talking to an attorney for the plaintiffs in the upcoming Supreme Court case, when he said that conservatives may intervene in the school finance lawsuit. Their contention, the attorney said, is that an efficient system could be achieved with school choice and vouchers. A school finance lobbyist told me about a law review [...]

Texas Politics

Complete coverage from the E-N's Austin bureau.

About 40 protesters clad in black with duct tape over their mouths lined the intersection at Congress Ave. and 11th Street in front of the State Capitol in opposition of the National Defense Authorization Act for FY 2012. The protesters were not alone in disputing the law. Former Solicitor General Ted Cruz did not attend [...]

Candid comments from two state agency leaders earlier this week about budget realities reinforce a view of some that Texas has no choice but to reform its tax structure to create a more stable system to meet needs of a growing population. But a hard pushback against any new revenue from some quarters will mean [...]

Texans Win With Health Care Reform

As the Republican Governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney made a strong case for passing health care reform in his state.  I agree with the Mitt Romney of 2006, and I’m excited about what the federal health care reform law means for my constituents.

Statesman Article: "Solar on the Horizon"

Texas might seem an unlikely candidate for the world's solar market leader. But with the combination of an expansive solar resource, recent success with wind power, extensive natural gas installations, competitive electricity markets and commitment to add transmission capacity, Texas might become just that.  HB 1937, sponsored by Rep. Mike Villarreal, D-San Antonio, enables homeowners to finance their solar panels through their property tax bills over a few decades instead of forking over many thousands of dollars up front...

Statesman article: "Andrade Appointment as Census Ambassador Gets Lukewarm Praise"

Gov. Rick Perry’s announcement yesterday that he has named Secretary of State Hope Andrade as Texas census ambassador is drawing tempered praise from a state lawmaker who says Perry was too slow to promote the 2010 census. “I trust that Hope Andrade will make the most out of the limited time she has to do her job,” state Rep. Mike Villarreal, D-San Antonio, said in a statement today. Last October, he wrote the governor urging him to establish a statewide Complete Count Committee to support census participation. He said he never got a response.
