Do you have any suggestions for how the state or school districts can do a better job of getting the word out to parents about pre-kindergarten programs?
Maybe you are familiar with other successful strategies for outreach to low-income families, or have ideas of ways that state or local agencies can help inform parents about pre-k opportunities.
The survey is part of the work the Texas Education Agency (TEA) is doing to implement a
bill I passed last year to improve outreach and enrollment in pre-k.
The former state demographer recently
suggested that improving educational opportunities for children before they reach kindergarten is one of the key strategies for reducing our high school dropout rate and maintaining our state's prosperity.
Research shows that voluntary pre-k programs in Texas schools are a key part of that early childhood education strategy, helping low-income students start kindergarten with the tools they need to succeed in school and beyond.
Yet, too many parents of
eligible children don't know about the availability of public school pre-k or the benefits for their children. Many of those kids are already behind on the first day of school and may never catch up.
