Healthy Futures Alliance is a recently formed non-profit organization that is bringing together diverse groups in San Antonio to use proven strategies for reducing unplanned pregnancy. I've had the pleasure of working closely with them on issues that range from prohibiting medically inaccurate information in sex ed classes to improving enrollment in the state's Women's Health Program.

- opportunities to mentor at-risk teens for one hour a week;
- HFA's January 15 press conference to launch the "Me Now...Baby Later" campaign; and
- a new national report, "The Fog Zone: How Misperceptions, Magical Thinking, and Ambivalence Put Young Adults at Risk for Unplanned Pregnancy." Among their many findings, they report that 30% of unmarried young adults say they know little or nothing about condoms.
If we are going to make real progress on addressing child abuse, high school dropouts, and the cycle of poverty -- not to mention controlling our state budget -- then we really need to get to work empowering young people to take responsibility and delay pregnancy until they are better prepared.
